176 - A izhou kiln "fish and algae" bowl A bowl of rounded, near-spherical form, the rim flaring gently outward and set upon a small, low foot. The decoration appears to be in the "white ground, iron-black" technique characteristic of Cizhou-type wares, in which a design is painted in an iron-bearing pigment over a body coated with white slip. A single large fish is set at the centre of the body, its scales rendered in a lattice (net-like) pattern, while the dorsal and tail fins are built up with layered striated lines to suggest movement. Flowing linear strokes suggestive of water weeds surround the fish, conveying the traditional design known as "fish and waterweed." H: 11.5cm D: 13.5cm Caliber: 9.5cm Wooden box China Song Dynasty
