An archaistic bronze tripod censer, ding-shaped, with "cloud and lingzhi" handles A stately and weighty tripod censer modelled on the ancient bronze ding. Its body, supported on three animal-form legs, is fitted with lingzhi-shaped handles, and the surface bears a design of auspicious clouds (xiangyun). The ding-form censer, inheriting the gravitas of ancient ritual vessels, later developed into a type of incense burner used before Buddhist altars and in the scholar’s studio. Marked Xuan (single character only). The auspicious-cloud motif is cherished as a symbol of good fortune, while the lingzhi fungus motif represents longevity and blessing; together with the subdued, aged patina characteristic of kodō (aged bronze), they give the piece its air of quiet authority. W: 20cm H: 12cm Caliber: 13.5cm Wooden box China, Ming Dynasty
