Goyen, Jan van Leiden 1596 - Den Haag 1656 41 x 61 cm A river landscape with a farmstead. Oil/cradled panel, bottom right on the barque monogrammed and dated 164(0/6/9), the slightly smudged paint application makes it difficult to read. Private collection, Southern Germany. A similar composition with a low horizon can already be found in Goyen’s London sketchbook (c. 1627-1635). Cf. Hans-Ulrich Beck, Jan van Goyen, Introduction and Catalogue of Hand Drawings I, Amsterdam 1972, no. 844/38. On the left-hand edge, a horseman on a ferry boat can be seen in the distance, a highly unusual motif in Goyen’s oeuvre. A very similar motif appears at virtually the same time in another of Goyen’s paintings, which bears the same monogram and is dated 1646 (cf. Hans-Ulrich Beck, Jan van Goyen 1596-1656, Catalogue of Paintings 2, Amsterdam 1973, no. 678 ‘A large ferryboat with two horsemen’). With an expert report by Dr Ursula Härting, 2024.
