Rottenhammer, Hans (Umkreis) München 1564 - Augsburg 1625 21,6 x 29 cm Diana and Actaeon. Oil/copper, verso old numbering 269 (?). Private collection, Southern Germany. Cf. H. Borggrefe, L. Konečný, V. Lüpkes and V. Vlnas (eds.), Hans Rottenhammer: begehrt - vergessen - neu entdeckt, exhibition catalogue, Prague 2008, p. 97 (mentions lost prime version). A red chalk drawing signed and dated 1595 by Rottenhammer, sold Sotheby's New York, 23 January 2001 and now in a private collection (fig. 1), shows precisely the same composition. Between 1595 and 1606 Rottenhammer was in Venice where he sold his own works and worked as an agent for patrons including Emperor Rudolf II. Rottenhammer gained a reputation there for small highly-finished cabinet paintings on copper of religious and mythological subjects, combining the landscape traditions of Germany with Italian compositional and figural styles, in particular those of Tintoretto and Veronese. As the first German artist to specialize in such cabinet paintings, his works were highly sought after and frequently recorded in prints and drawings.
