Dormition of the Virgin Russia, Moscow probably c. 1500 49 x 36 cm The Mother of God lies on her deathbed in the centre of the painting, surrounded by the Apostles and two disciples of the Apostles, who are depicted as bishops in the background. Behind the deathbed stands Christ within a mandorla, holding his mother’s soul - depicted as a swaddled infant - in his hands. In the foreground, an angel is cutting off the hands of Jechonias, as he had attempted to overturn the bier.
