A TAPISSERIE FRAGMENT WITH MYTHOLOGICAL SCENE Flanders, 17th/18th century 280 x 235 cm Woven from wool and silk. The finely woven tapestry depicted a scene from the conquest of Troy. In the background is the wooden horse, built by Odysseus on the advice of the seer Calchas, who had advised him to proceed with cunning, in order to finally conquer Troy after a long siege. Greek warriors hid inside and were carried within the city walls by the Trojans, who believed they were bringing a gift from the gods into the city. However, there were voices of warning amongst the Trojans, such as Laocoon and Cassandra, daughter of Priam, depicted in the foreground in historicising robes, which went unheeded. Floral tendrils adorn the surrounding border. Forced perspective; the central panel and border have been trimmed. Partially frayed and with reweaving. Restored. German private property
