Vitín Cortezo - Female costume sketch for the film *Goya: A Story of Solitude* - Costume sketch for a character in the film *Goya: A Story of Solitude*, directed by Nino Quevedo and released in 1971, starring Francisco Rabal, Irina Demick, Jacques Perrim, José María Prada, and others. Title and handwritten inscription by Vitín Cortezo in the upper right corner: “The Duchess - / 10 Procession / penitents / visit to Goya [?] / and S. Ant. de la Florida / (with white mantilla).” Below: “40.” Explanatory texts referring to the depicted attire: “Falla bodice” (with an arrow pointing to the left); “Very dark gray falla skirt” (with an arrow pointing to the right); “Black velvet embellishments” (with an arrow pointing to the right). Signed and dated 1970, at the bottom, near the lower right corner. Remnants of holes made by a stapler where fabric samples must have been attached. Vitín Cortezo (or Víctor María Cortezo, Madrid, 1908–1978) was a multifaceted artist specializing in the design and composition of costume sketches, as well as a prominent set designer in the Spanish theater scene during the second and third quarters of the 20th century. His artistic career following the Spanish postwar period of that century—combined with his love of drawing, painting, and fashion design, as well as his outstanding personality—led him to become a true icon of modernity in a stifling Francoist society, in addition to his status as a homosexual and an antifascist, not to mention his affluent family background in the field of medicine. We would like to thank Ms. Laura Flores Camarero, from the Documentation Department of the Museo del Traje—Center for Ethnological Heritage Research in Madrid—for her invaluable assistance in identifying the creator of this collection.
