Vitín Cortezo - Female costume design for the film *Fortunata y Jacinta* - Costume design for the film *Fortunata y Jacinta*. Although two films with the same title were made—one by Artiñano and the other by Cortezo—this may have been a project that was never completed. Handwritten inscription of the work’s title by the artist in the upper left corner: “Fortunata y Jacinta.” Handwritten inscription by the artist in the upper right corner: “Doña Barbara - / Costume 4 - / Sections 9 through 17 - 18th - 36th - 44th - 46th - 47th -”. Text preceded by a date, toward the left, reading: “(with a cape in San / Isidro and the market -)”. Another text preceded by a date, to the left, reading: “Dark outfit - / without a shawl.” Signed and dated 1969 in the lower right corner. Vitín Cortezo (or Víctor María Cortezo, Madrid, 1908–1978) was one of the most versatile artists specializing in the design and composition of costume sketches, and a prominent set designer on the Spanish theater scene during the second and third quarters of the 20th century. His artistic output following the Spanish postwar period of that century—combined with his love of drawing, painting, and fashion design, as well as his outstanding personality—led him to become a true icon of modernity in a stifling Francoist society, in addition to his status as a homosexual and anti-fascist, not to mention his affluent family background in the field of medicine. We would like to thank Ms. Laura Flores Camarero, from the Documentation Department of the Museo del Traje—Center for Ethnological Heritage Research in Madrid—for her invaluable assistance in identifying the creator of this collection.
