Costume sketch for a female character, possibly for the Spanish film *Música de Ayer*, released in 1958 and directed by Juan de Orduña, produced by Producciones Orduña Films, in which Ana María Olaria plays the lead role of Laura Gayán. The role of Doña Lola Gasparín is played by actress María Fernando Ladrón de Guevara (mother of Amparo Rivelles and Carlos Larrañaga, and grandmother of Larrañaga and Luis Merlo). The design shown here, created by Vitín Cortezo for the final costume in that film, must correspond to the one Doña Lola wore when she went to the mill in search of Laura, with some variations in the final garment. The reverse side of the drawing features a set design sketch, done in black pencil, which may correspond to a scene from this film (see last images). It should be compared and correlated with the one held by the Reina Sofía National Art Museum, temporarily on loan to the National Theater Museum in Almagro (Ciudad Real): https://www.museoreinasofia.es/colecciones/obra/tres-sombreros-de-copa Vitín Cortezo (or Víctor María Cortezo, Madrid, 1908–1978) was one of the multifaceted artists specializing in the design and composition of costumes, and a prominent set designer on the Spanish theater scene during the second and third quarters of the 20th century. His artistic career following the Spanish postwar period of that century—combined with his passion for drawing, painting, and fashion design, as well as his remarkable personality—led him to become a true icon of modernity in the stifling Francoist society, in addition to his status as a homosexual and anti-fascist, not to mention his affluent family background in the field of medicine.
