The Grande Complication watches were first manufactured in the second half of the 19th century in the Vallée de Joux. The 1920s marked the beginning of an era in which such complicated and expensive watches were no longer affordable. Over time, the existing movements were exhausted, and no new Grande Complication watches are known to have been produced. However, 50 years later, IWC still had a few movements in stock, for which the external parts were individually crafted by hand with the utmost precision, faithfully replicating the historical model. The movement consists of 1,300 individual parts and features a chronograph, a perpetual calendar, and a finely tuned hour, quarter-hour, and minute chime.
