VAN DER AA (Pieter, editor). A Careful Collection of the Most Memorable Sea and Land Voyages to the East and West Indies Since the Years 1504–1506. Leiden, Pieter vander Aa, 1707. In-8, full period vellum. “Reysen 1504–1506” inscribed in ink on the spine. Binding is faded and has a missing section. The collection *Naaukeurige Versameling der Gedenkwaardigste Zee- en Land-Reysen* contains a total of 127 distinct travel accounts dating from the year 1246 to 1696. The publisher, Pieter van der Aa, designed the work in a modular format, allowing these 127 accounts to be bound into 29 volumes. Our copy includes 5 accounts: — Rampspoedige water-togt door Franciscus de Porras. Describing the mutiny led by Francisco de Porras against Christopher Columbus when the latter was shipwrecked on the island of Jamaica. — The Glorious Sea Voyage of Francisco d’Almeida to the East Indies, First Viceroy of Those Lands, in the Year 1505. This account describes the expedition of the first viceroy of the Indies, who set sail with a massive fleet on a mission to establish Portuguese naval dominance, build fortresses in East Africa (Kilwa and Mombasa), and secure the spice trade in India. — Pedro da Nhaya’s expedition to the East Indies. Nhaya is famous for having established the first Portuguese trading post and fortress at Sofala (in present-day Mozambique). — First expedition of Juan Díaz de Solís and Vicente Yáñez Pinzón to the West Indies in the year 1506. Describing the first voyage of discovery to Yucatán (Mexico) and Central America, led by Juan Díaz de Solís accompanied by Vicente Yáñez Pinzón (who had been the captain of the Niña with Columbus). — Tristano da Cunha’s naval expedition. Describes the Portuguese fleet of 14 ships sent to India. En route, veering far into the South Atlantic, the explorer discovered the extremely isolated volcanic archipelago that still bears his name today: Tristan da Cunha. Each account is illustrated with fold-out plates. 12 in total. The last few pages are faded.
