Caillot, Letter on the New Medicinal Baths, 1752 Letter on the New Medicinal Baths, by M.C. (Caillot), Doctor of Medicine, Paris, Veuve Quillau, 84 pp., 1752A rare 18th-century treatise on steam baths - a rarity at the time. The doctor from Provence describes a machine invented by a certain Guérin - a ‘mechanic from Montpellier’. This machine is capable of administering baths, showers and steam treatments of all kinds, and operates according to the principles of the machine invented by Denis Papin. It consists of ‘...pumps, containers, athanors, thermometers, cupping heads, and a system of channels and taps, (which make it possible) to concentrate the steam as intensely as possible … upon the body inside, and to control, increase, decrease or interrupt the heat at will…” At the end is the favourable assessment by the Faculty of Medicine at Montpellier.
