The Annunciation, polychrome wooden sculpture, South German / Alpine, 17th century. Mary has placed her right hand on her chest, her robe slightly raised, and is subduing Satan - depicted as a serpent - with her bare foot. Her closed eyes and inward gaze emphasise the moment of the Annunciation. The posture and drapery are stylistically characteristic of the late 17th century, or the period around 1700; the wood is carved in the full-relief style, open at the back, with original polychrome paint; partially restored, partly gilded; height 76 cm
