Ludwig Willroider, Alpine Village under a Stormy Sky, Impressionist oil painting, framed Ludwig Willroider, 1845 Villach, Carinthia - 1910 Bernried/Lake Starnberg, a prominent Austrian landscape painter and etcher. He was a member of the renowned ‘Munich School’; here: a view across meadows towards a settlement with a church tower set against a range of hills. A dense, cloudy sky stretches above. The sparingly scattered, Impressionist splashes of colour emphasise the radiance of the landscape in the run-up to the approaching storm; oil on cardboard, 18 x 32 cm; on the left: Willroider’s distinctive monogram; in an older gold frame About the artist: Ludwig Willroider’s elder brother Josef, who was also a successful landscape painter, gave him his first drawing lessons. In 1868, he moved to Munich. There, he continued his training under the influence of renowned artists such as Adolf Lier, Eduard Schleich the Elder and Carl Ebert. Ludwig Willroider devoted himself almost exclusively to landscape painting. His works are characterised by precise observation of nature and a masterful depiction of light and cloudscapes. His frequent subjects include river and lake landscapes (e.g. at Lake Starnberg), forest paths and autumnal meadows featuring figures or animals, and impressions of his native Carinthia. Many of his works are now held in major collections, including the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich and the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
