Fritz Richter-Elsner, Hermes, Messenger of the Gods, bronze sculpture, ca. 1910, Gladenbeck Fritz Richter-Elsner, 1884 Köppelsdorf – 1970 Detmold, German sculptor, shown here: The heroic Hermes, messenger of the gods, clad only in a loincloth, wearing laced sandals (talaria) and a winged traveler’s hat (petasos), holds a money pouch in his hand. Behind him stand large, laced packages and an anchor—symbols of commercial seafaring, for which the messenger of the gods serves as patron here. Bronze with a black-brown patina, H 34 cm, on a dark green marble pedestal. Signed on the plinth with the foundry stamp “Oskar Gladenbeck.” About the artist: Fritz Richter-Elsner studied at the School of Industry and Applied Arts in Sonneberg as well as in Munich. From 1905 to 1916, he served as artistic director of the court foundry Osar Gladenbeck & Co. in Berlin-Friedrichshagen. Many of his bronzes, such as this example, therefore bear the signature “F. Richter” or “F. Richter fec.” along with the Gladenbeck foundry mark.
