Victor Puhonny, "Waldbach", Framed oil painting (WVZ No.: 094) Victor Puhonny, 1838 Prague - 1909 Baden-Baden, a leading German landscape and genre painter; here: “Waldbach”, oil on canvas, 70.6 x 50.4 cm, signed on the right, framed. WVZ Joachim O. Engert, Painting No. 144, WVZ No. 094, figure p. 239, private collection, Baden-Baden (copy from the WVZ enclosed) About the artist: After moving from Prague to Baden-Baden, Victor Puhonny studied under the Baden court painter Georg Saal. In Paris, Louis Frédéric Schützenberger was his teacher. Puhonny was a close friend of the violinist and painter Vitus Staudacher. Both often painted en plein air in and around Baden-Baden. In this style of plein air painting, the artists painted the figure directly, in natural light and its natural surroundings. This form of painting thus contrasts with studio painting. Staudacher and Puhonny were regarded in Baden-Baden as the pioneers of this new style of painting. In 2009, the city of Baden-Baden posthumously awarded Victor Puhonny the ‘Künstler in Baden-Baden’ city prize.
