Portrait from 1737, a stately three-quarter-length portrait of Jacobus Engelmayer, in a gilded stucco frame Jacobus Engelmayer, born in 1697, depicted on his 40th birthday in a self-assured pose, dressed in a fur-trimmed cloak, with his hand on the left - adorned with a fine ring - resting on a book. The golden order’s chain and the coat of arms on the left - depicting a shield with a set of scales on a green background and a standing angel as a crest - identify the subject as a member of the nobility. The golden scales symbolise justice and suggest a corresponding office. The book symbolises erudition, wisdom, a firm connection to printed knowledge, and the status of a thoughtful, enlightened individual. On the right is the inscription: ‘Jacobus Engelmayer, Natus 1697 & Pictus anno 1737’. Oil on canvas, 90 x 68 cm, retouched and showing age-related craquelure, in a gilded stucco frame.
