Dutch Master, c. 1650, Madonna and Child, oil painting in an antique frame Abraham Bloemart (1564-1651), in the style of/from the circle of, here: a bust portrait of the Mother of God, which fills almost the entire picture plane. Her gaze rests on the Child, who returns her gaze; the two are intimately connected. Mary is not surrounded by a halo. A red ribbon woven into her hair, which also holds her headscarf in place, serves a wholly earthly purpose. Were it not for the red robe and the ultramarine blue cloak, which make Mary recognisable, the painting could just as easily be a depiction of the tender love of any young mother, Oil on canvas, historically relined with minor retouching and partial overpainting in the lower right-hand third, fine age-related craquelure, 50 x 40 cm, in a 19th-century gilded stucco frame.
