Gerrit Lundens, attributed to / studio, “The Shoulder Operation”, oil painting from the late 17th century. Gerrit Lundens, 1622 - Amsterdam - 1686, attributed to / studio, here: A genre scene depicting a doctor or barber-surgeon treating the shoulder of a seated man; two further figures are present in the dimly lit interior, oil on hand-planed oak panel, 35.7 x 27.4 cm, slight paint wear at the bottom, probably due to former framing; a crack in the wood is barely visible; retouching around the edges; minimal flaking of paint. In 1937, the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe acquired another version of this work, described as a “copy after A. Brouwer”. However, there is only a similarity in subject matter with Brouwer’s painting in the Städel in Frankfurt (https://www.staedelmuseum.de/go/ds/1050); H. Gerson has therefore attributed the Karlsruhe painting to Gerrit Lunden. In doing so, he refers to Lunden’s painting “Chirurgien” in the Schloss Collection (https://pilot-demo.jdcrp.org/artwork/lundens_surgeon_52619/).
