August Gaul, Feeding Bear, bronze, 1895, signed August Gaul, 1869 Großauheim - 1921 Berlin, Feeding Bear, bronze on a marble plinth, height of bronze 9.5 cm, Height: 14 cm, signed About the artist: Gaul initially studied at the Academy of Drawing in Hanau, and later in Berlin. There, he worked, amongst others, in the circle of the renowned sculptor Reinhold Begas. His focus was on animals - particularly lions, elephants, bears, ostriches, cats and other zoo and farm animals. His early works were still influenced by Historicism and Neo-Baroque. Later, his forms became significantly simpler, clearer and more minimalist. As a result, his art appeared more modern than many sculptures of his time. In 1898, Gaul was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession, which opposed the conservative art establishment of the German Empire.
