After two semesters in Hans Gaensslen’s commercial art class, he transferred to HAP Grieshaber’s fine art class. Stöhrer lived in Berlin from 1959 onwards. He became a member of the German Artists’ Association, participating in its annual exhibitions in 1964 (in Berlin) and 1971 (in Stuttgart). Following a four-semester stint as a visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts, he was appointed to a full professorship in 1986. Even whilst still a student, he was one of the leading artists of the New Figuration movement in Germany. In the years that followed, he continued to develop his mostly large-format paintings, uninfluenced by Pop Art, Minimal Art or Conceptual Art, whilst engaging with the free painterly gesture of Abstract Expressionism.
