Thanasis Stephopulos, Abstract Landscape (αφηρημένο τοπίο), mixed media, unsigned. Framed with a passepartout Thanassis Stephopoulos (Θανάσης Στεφόπουλος), 1928 Amfissa - 2012 Athens, Greek painter and art philosopher; he is regarded as one of the most important figures in modern art in Greece. Here: Abstract Landscape (αφηρημένο τοπίο), gouache & watercolour on paper, 30 x 60 cm, signed on the right, framed with a passepartout About the artist: Stephopoulos studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts. There he had famous teachers such as Yannis Moralis. From 1956 to 1964, he lived and worked in Paris. He was part of a group of young Greek artists who went to France to discover new, modern art styles and bring them back to Greece. Stephopoulos developed a style of painting all his own. He did not paint landscapes exactly as they appeared in reality, but rather conveyed emotions and forms through abstract art. His paintings blend the ancient Greek tradition with modern art from Western Europe.
