Renée Sintenis, Young Man, signed drypoint etching, c. 1920 Renée Sintenis, 1888 Glatz - 1965 Berlin, sculptor, medallist and graphic artist, shown here: Young Man, nude, etching, 23 x 16.5 cm, sheet size 30 x 19 cm, hand-signed, without frame About the artist: After breaking with her family, Renée Sintenis devoted herself entirely to art; she was influenced as a pupil and model by Georg Kolbe and became firmly established in the artistic circles of the Weimar Republic through her husband, Emil Rudolf Weiß. She became known above all for her striking, award-winning depictions of athletes, as well as her meticulously detailed, small-scale animal bronzes - such as the famous ‘Young Bear’, which later became a symbol of Berlin as the Berlinale Bear - which led to her being appointed to the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1931 as its first female sculptor, before her career was abruptly cut short during the Nazi era by forced expulsion and reprisals.
