Marie Sandholt, Blooming Cacti & Succulents, oil painting from 1938 Anna "Marie" Louise Sandholt, 1872 - Copenhagen - 1942, Danish painter, shown here: Blooming Cacti & Succulents on a white wooden table against a dark background, oil on canvas, 64 x 82 cm, signed and dated on the right 1938About the artist: After finishing school, Marie Sandholt began her artistic training at the Danish School of Drawing and Art for Women (Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder). From 1892 to 1901, she continued her training at the Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Art for Women (Kunstakademiets Kunstskole for Kvinder). It was during this period that she made her debut at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1895. She did not regard her training at the Academy of Fine Arts as a major artistic challenge and described her stay at the home of the painter Viggo Pedersen from 1897 to 1899 in Skamstrup near Holbæk as a greater source of inspiration. Between 1900 and 1910, she undertook several study trips, including to Italy to study classical art and to Paris to familiarise herself with modern art. She spent two months at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, where the Norwegian painter Christian Krohg taught. There she expanded her knowledge of technique and composition, which she herself considered important for her future work. She received various scholarships and grants between 1898 and 1915, including several from the Danish Academy. In 1939, she was awarded the Kristian Zahrtmann Scholarship. Marie Sandholt exhibited her works repeatedly at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition between 1895 and 1942 and held several solo exhibitions in Copenhagen. Following her death, a memorial exhibition was held at the Charlottenborg Art Gallery in 1943.
