Mel Ramos, Chimpanzee, signed colour silkscreen print from 1971 Mel Ramos, 1935 Sacramento, California - 2018 Oakland, California, American artist, is regarded as a leading figure in Pop Art. Here: Female Nude with Chimpanzee, sheet dimensions 81 x 61 cm, signed, dated (19)71, numbered 116/125, stained, without frame About the artist: From 1963 onwards, Mel Ramos turned his attention to the central theme of his work. Moving on from female superheroes such as Wonder Woman, he began depicting pin-up girls and typical advertising set-ups designed to sell products through the portrayal of provocative female sexuality. This resulted in images in which he ‘draped women in vulgar, vivacious poses atop painted consumer goods, thereby parodying the trivial glamour of an advertising ploy that stokes the desire to buy through sexual allure.’ These ‘Commercial Pin-Ups’ were to remain Mel Ramos’s trademark for decades.
