Werner Michaelis, “Eve with the Apple” after Conrat Meit, bronze sculpture from the 1930s Werner Michaelis, 1907 Züllchow/Stettin - 1989 Hamburg, German sculptor. Here: bronze sculpture “Eve with the Apple”, based on the famous boxwood pair “Adam and Eve” by Conrat Meit, circa 1510, now in Gotha Castle Museum; bronze with a golden-brown patina, height 34.5 cm, casting defect on the back of the right shoulder, signed on the plinth. About the artist: Werner Michaelis initially worked as a muralist, but from 1931 to 1934 he studied sculpture at the School of Applied Arts in Hamburg-Altona. Thanks to a scholarship, he studied under Johann Michael Bossard at the Hansische University of the Arts from 1934 to 1937. He later furthered his studies at the art academies in Berlin and Munich. After the Second World War, he moved into a studio in the famous ‘Elbkurhaus’ in Hamburg-Blankenese, which at the time served as a vibrant meeting place for artists such as Hans-Hermann Steffens and R.K.H. Sonderborg. His works range from figurative representations to abstract formations in stone, metal and concrete, which can now be seen in many schools, public spaces and on building façades across northern Germany.
