Georges Lapchine (Георгий Александрович Лапшин), attributed, Mediterranean harbour scene, prestigious oil painting in a stucco frame Georges Lapchine, also known as Georgij Aleksandrovich Lapsin, attributed,1885 Moscow - 1951 Paris, Russian Impressionist and Modernist; here: at a Mediterranean jetty with a view across the sea to magnificent buildings (Venice?), a fishing boat has moored to unload. Further boats can be seen on the blue sea on the right of the picture; oil on canvas, 60 x 86 cm; on the reverse, in the lower left-hand corner, an old repair patch; signed or inscribed on the left; in a heavy gold-stucco frame with an engraved brass nameplate (Overall: 80 x 120 cm), from an old Stuttgart collection. Regarding attribution: The painting possesses great chromatic vigour and is stylistically consistent with Lapchine’s oeuvre. The signature corresponds to his familiar style, and the canvas is also old. However, the signature stands out under a quartz lamp, suggesting it may have been added at a later date. For this reason, we are exercising caution here, offering only an attribution and leaving the final judgement to the experts.
