Kiki Kogelnik, "Rainy", signed colour silkscreen print from 1977 Kiki Kogelnik, 1935 Graz - 1997 Vienna, "Rainy", colour silkscreen print, 63.5 x 48.5 cm, signed, dated (19)77, titled and numbered 286/300, edges slightly browned and somewhat uneven at the margins, faint traces of adhesive tape visible at the corners, without a frame About the artist: Kogelnik was one of the most significant Austrian female artists of the 20th century. Although she is frequently associated with Pop Art, she never regarded herself as a pure Pop Art artist. Her work combines painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics and installations with a highly distinctive, futuristic visual language. She studied in Vienna at the University of Applied Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts. From 1962 onwards, she lived and worked in New York. There, she became part of a close-knit group of artists that included Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, Larry Rivers and Tom Wesselmann, inter alia. From the 1970s onwards, she engaged ironically and critically with ideals of beauty and female role models. Today she is regarded as one of the most important Austrian artists of the post-war period and as a significant pioneer of a feminist perspective on Pop Art.
