Raimer Jochims, “Sesostris III”, acrylic, wall installation, 1985-91 Rainer Jochims, born 1935 in Kiel, lives and works in Maintal near Frankfurt am Main, German artist, “Sesostris III”, acrylic applied with a palette knife on chipboard, 132 x 120 x 1.3 cm, signed, dated, titled and labelled on the reverse, work number 85/27, with hanging mechanism, WVZ No. G-1985-27 (Catalogue raisonné: https://raimer-jochims.de/werkgruppe/spanplattenbilder/g-1985-27)About the artist: Since 1961, Rainer Jochims has been developing his concept of chromatic painting, having discovered a fascination with colour following a ‘black phase’. From 1967, he taught at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Art and, until 1971, at the Munich Academy of Fine Art. From 1971 to 1997, he was Professor of Free Painting and Art Theory at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. During his tenure as Rector of the Städelschule (1971 to 1985), he recruited artists including Thomas Bayrle, Willi Schmidt and Peter Kubelka as lecturers at the school. Jochims has held numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Germany and abroad; he has also given lectures and lecture series on art-theoretical aspects of the ‘experience of identity’. According to Jochims, this experience of identity can be found in all cultures across the globe and manifests itself through the human senses. As a painter, he is particularly interested in the visual aspect of this experience. He seeks to uncover the underlying - and shared - theoretical construct behind it. Thus, for him, colour is not merely colour, nor is form merely any form, but always, first and foremost, life. Through his art, he seeks to trace this inherent life.
