Gottfried Helnwein, Soldiers, signed colour lithograph from 1991 Gottfried Helnwein, born 1948 in Vienna, Austrian-Irish artist, Soldiers, colour lithograph, 61 x 85 cm, signed, numbered 253/280, without frame About the artist: Helnwein became known primarily for his hyperrealistic images of wounded and bandaged children. Throughout his career, he has explored the themes of pain, injury and violence, whilst also addressing taboo and controversial subjects from recent history. In particular, the theme of National Socialism is addressed in his works; however, the depiction of children remains at the heart of his work. From 1965 to 1969, he attended the Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna and, from 1969 to 1973, studied painting in Professor Rudolf Hausner’s masterclass at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. During this period, he worked with a wide variety of techniques and stylistic devices. Alongside drawing, watercolour, acrylic and oil painting, and various mixed media, photography is an essential medium for him - often in connection with performance art.
