About the artist: Erwin Heerich is regarded as a leading exponent of German Minimal Art and post-war geometric abstraction. His works lie at the intersection of fine art, geometry and architecture. From 1945, he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Ewald Mataré. Until 1954, he shared a master’s studio there with Joseph Beuys. In the mid-1960s, he gained international renown for his extremely precise, mathematical sculptures made of brown cardboard. His minimalist objects and isometric drawings took him to Kassel in 1968 (documenta 4) and 1977 (documenta 6). From 1969 to 1987, Erwin Heerich taught as a professor of sculpture and graphic art at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Art.
