Rupprecht Geiger, Untitled, signed colour silkscreen print, framed Rupprecht Geiger, 1908 - Munich - 2009, neon orange on neon pink, colour silkscreen print, 26.5 x 24 cm, signed, mounted under glass and attractively framed with a passepartout About the artist: Rupprecht Geiger co-founded the ZEN 49 artists’ group in Munich in 1949 and is an outstanding exponent of German non-objective painting. His art was championed by Hilla von Rebay, a German painter and founding director of the Museum for Non-Objective Painting (later the Guggenheim Foundation, New York). Geiger built his life’s work around the theme of ‘colour’, consistently focusing on reduction and clarity. He regarded colour as an autonomous value; freed from form, its spiritual power was brought to the fore. To this end, he also created irregular canvases (shaped canvases) long before Frank Stella did so, for example, before later limiting himself almost entirely to the primal forms of the circle and the rectangle. From 1965 to 1976, Rupprecht Geiger was Professor of Painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf.
