Bella Brisel, “Barque”, oil painting, Paris 1959, framed Bella Brisel, 1929 Tiberias - 1982 Tel Aviv, prominent Israeli painter and printmaker, “Barque”, 3 metaphysical heads, oil on canvas, 92 x 66 cm, signed on the right, inscribed and dated on the reverse 59, in a Conzen frame About the artist: Bella Brisel initially studied in the studio of Aharon Avni in Tel Aviv (Aharon Avni, 1906-1951, a prominent Israeli painter and founder of the renowned Avni Institute). In the 1950s, she moved to Paris and studied at the famous art academy, the “Académie des Beaux-Arts”. In 1955, she won the “Prize for Israeli Painters in Paris” there. Photographs from this period in her Paris studio can still be viewed today on Getty Images. She later moved to the Spanish island of Formentera. In her studio there, she created many of her profound, almost magical paintings, away from the mainstream art scene. Following her death, the “Tel Aviv Museum of Art” dedicated a major, comprehensive exhibition to her, entitled “Waters from Waters”, to showcase her unique life’s work to today’s generations. Bella Brisel’s paintings often appear mysterious and otherworldly. They are full of emotion and make use of subtle colour blends and multi-layered textures. She frequently painted delicate yet dynamic forms that convey a sense of movement. Her subjects often included women, motherhood, couples and spiritual themes.
