Rudolf Ernst Bredow, two portraits of women, pastels from 1958, attractively framed Rudolf Ernst Bredow, 1909 Berlin - 1973 Bremen, German painter of Post-Expressionism, counted amongst the artists of the ‘Lost Generation’, shown here: Cubist-style abstract portraits of women wearing hats and carrying objects, pastels, approx. 60 x 47 cm, signed and dated once; both works equally attractively framed under glass with passepartout About the artist: Rudolf Bredow is one of the artists who, due to the turmoil of the two world wars and the National Socialists’ artistic dictatorship, were unable to develop a style that could have been classified as abstraction or Art Informel after 1945. (‘Lost Generation’). From 1930 to 1934, he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin under the graphic artist Hans Orlowski, the costume and set designer Harold Bengen, and the painter Max Kaus (1891-1977). When Bredow resumed his work in 1945 after completing his military service, he initially drew on the representational styles of Cubism and abstraction, and, above all, Expressionism, from which he developed his own post-Expressionist style. This began to take shape around 1955 and, from around 1960-61 until his untimely death in 1973, culminated in an artistically mature and independent late body of work.
