Don Quixote mistakenly takes the windmills for evil, giant giants with long arms; he attacks the ‘giants’ from his horse Rocinante and is seriously injured by the turning blades. This episode gave rise to the idiom ‘fighting windmills’, oil on wooden panel, a thin, barely visible crack on the left of the panel, 68 x 75 cm, signed and dated lower on the left 1928About the artist: Carl Baum initially completed an apprenticeship as an interior painter at a Frankfurt-based firm. In 1908 he met the painter Fritz Boehle and became his sole pupil from 1910 to 1914; in 1909 he was awarded a scholarship by the renowned Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt. After completing his military service following the war years, he settled in Frankfurt as a freelance artist and, from 1926, in Freiburg. He specialised in realistic landscape depictions of the Black Forest and the Kaiserstuhl. He was also known for his detailed depictions of horses, carts and rural life. His works were exhibited in Berlin, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Munich and Strasbourg; in 1992, the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg honoured him with a memorial exhibition.
