Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004). Couple in an Embrace. Double terracotta vase with an engobe glaze known as “sigillata.” H_17 cm W_16 cm D_11 cm Provenance: private collection in Occitania, belonging to a friend of Pierre Bayle. Note: A ceramist from Languedoc who trained in Castelnaudary, Pierre Bayle combined traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde experimentation, establishing ceramics as an art form in its own right, straddling the line between utilitarian and decorative objects. He creates pieces made of sigillata clay, first engobed and then smoked, with surfaces worked to highlight their texture and crackle patterns, which lend depth and uniqueness to his works.
