△ Paul Delvaux (Wanze, 1897 – Furnes, 1994) Madame Roland July 10, 1989 Watercolor and ink on paper Signed, dated, and titled lower right 104.5 × 74.7 cm Two hundred years later, Paul Delvaux pays tribute to this prominent figure of the French Revolution. Manon Roland, born Jeanne-Marie Philippon (1754–1793), married Jean-Marie Roland de La Platière, an inspector of manufactures, in 1780. This intellectual couple was living in Lyon when the first insurrectionary movements broke out, in which they took an active part. Upon returning to Paris in 1791, Madame Roland founded a salon where writers and politicians committed themselves to the Republic. Her husband was appointed Minister of the Interior. As early supporters of the Girondins, they co-authored the “Letter Written to the King by the Minister of the Interior” on June 10, 1792, in the fourth year of Liberty. Her direct involvement in political life led to her arrest and imprisonment the following year.
