Maurice Utrillo (Paris, 1883 – Dax, 1955) Le Café de la Tourelle, rue du Mont Cenis à Montmartre Circa 1914–1915 Oil on canvas Signed lower right 51 × 65 cm; with frame: 90 × 80 cm Maurice Utrillo is the painter of Montmartre. He roamed its streets and social haunts. La Belle Gabrielle, Le Lapin Agile, and La Tourelle are thus recurring motifs in his work. Here, using his thick impasto—where paint blends with plaster—Maurice Utrillo creates a painting emblematic of the White Period.
