Porte Dogon, Mali Wood, metal H. 65 cm; W. 43.5 cm The choice of motifs in Dogon art is by no means arbitrary; each carries meaning and symbolism, corresponding to a codified system. Each motif is chosen in relation to the object’s function and significance. The form and decoration must be read and interpreted as a message. “More generally, these motifs form the basis of the systems of graphic signs found not only among the Dogon, but in many other civilizations in Africa ” (Geneviève Calame-Griaule). The decoration at the base of this door, carved into a rectangular piece of light-colored wood, consists of a beautiful alternation of bands and friezes of triangular shapes that follow one another to form a herringbone pattern. Among the Dogon, this chevron pattern is called di odu (“path of water”) or so odu (“path of speech”). When combined with a series of delicately incised lines, it can take on a cosmic meaning: “the path of descent between heaven and earth.” According to Dogon cosmogony, opening a granary to remove grain is equivalent to the very act by which Amma created the world. In the Dogon creation myth, there are constant references to the opening and closing of the “world egg.” Provenance - Private collection, France
