Statue masculine commémorative Dengese, République démocratique du Congo Early 20th century Wood H. 63 cm Height with base: 66.5 cm With a solemn and majestic presence, this effigy celebrates the figure of the dignitary and the enduring prestige he commands within the community. The Dengese, settled in the Kasai region to the north of the Kuba Kingdom, developed a highly codified style of statuary, intended in particular to honor ancestors and men of high rank. These commemorative figures represent the Itoci, initiated dignitaries whose insignia attest to their rank and authority. The architecturally designed headdress, a true mark of distinction, dominates the head with its geometrically structured cap, extended by its characteristic apical appendage. Associated with the Totshi dignitaries, it traditionally expresses respect, intelligence, and maturity. The ring-like markings on the neck, the ornaments, and above all the network of finely engraved geometric scarifications—arranged with almost graphic precision across the torso—transform the body into a veritable social language. Beauty, belonging, and status are intimately intertwined here. The face, with its broad and concentrated features, exudes a meditative gravity and a profound serenity. The deliberately elongated and powerfully stylized form of the body accentuates the nobility of the silhouette. The piece is enhanced by a deep brown, warm, and satiny patina, whose nuances and areas of wear subtly reveal the object’s age and history.
