Philip K. Dick Autograph Document Signed on the Co-Authorship of A Scanner Darkly ADS signed "Philip K. Dick," one page, 8.5 x 5.5, April 15, 1973. Handwritten document regarding the authorship of his sci-fi classic A Scanner Darkly, in full: "This is to state that Miss Leslie Busby, my fiancee, participated to a great extent is writing the outline & novel, A Scanner Darkly with me, & I owe her one half of all income derived from it." In fine condition. The consignor notes that this was originally acquired directly from Philip Dick's last wife, Leslie 'Tessa' Dick. Dated four years before the 1977 publication of A Scanner Darkly, this remarkable statement offers an unusually intimate glimpse into the novel’s development and the complicated personal relationships surrounding Philip K. Dick’s work. Drawing heavily on Dick’s experiences within the California drug culture of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the novel became one of his most personal and acclaimed works, blending science fiction with a devastating portrait of addiction, paranoia, and fractured identity. Dick’s explicit acknowledgment here of Leslie 'Tessa' Busby’s substantial role in shaping both the outline and manuscript—and his promise to share equally in its proceeds—provides rare documentary evidence of collaboration behind a book generally identified solely with Dick’s authorship.
