OTTOMAN ART, LATE 18TH–EARLY 19TH CENTURY Scribe’s set, Divit (or Galamdan) A quill case with an attached inkwell (without a lid), made of chiseled copper and bronze alloy, featuring rich engraved decoration of foliage and stylized floral motifs along the entire length of the body. Dimensions: Length 21.5 cm The divit was the essential tool of the scribe (kâtib) in the Ottoman world; it was often worn at the belt or tucked into a scarf, combining a penholder and inkwell into a single functional object that also served as a symbol of its owner’s social status (civil servants, calligraphers, literate merchants). The finest pieces, such as this one—judging by the quality of the engraving—were produced in the major Ottoman craft centers (Cairo, Damascus, Istanbul).
