FRANCE, BELLE ÉPOQUE, ca. 1900 "France Toujours" Large sculpture in white statuary marble depicting a young female figure, nude and standing, holding a lion’s head in her right arm, with the skin draping down to her feet. Circular base bearing the inscription “France Toujours”; likely a one-of-a-kind piece. Dimensions: h. 75 cm This sculpture, with its title “FRANCE TOUJOURS” engraved on the base, was inspired by the revanchist movement following France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. This defeat resulted in Alsace and Lorraine falling into German hands. Paul Déroulède (1846–1914) founded the “Ligue des Patriotes” in 1882, and his revanchist stance made him a key figure in France’s nationalist right. This sculpture depicts France as an elegant, standing figure—proud and triumphant.
