Annotated in the lower right corner in ink: “Reduce to 12 centimeters / in width.” Partially based on the frontispiece by Célestin Nanteuil for the 1833 Renduel edition. Hermann Vogel created preparatory drawings for woodcuts illustrating the 1883 edition of Victor Hugo’s novel *The Last Day of a Condemned Man*, engraved primarily by Fortuné Louis Méaulle and published by Eugène Hugues. 26.2 x 17 cm.
