JUSTUS SUSTERMANS (FLEMISH 1597-1681) AND STUDIOPORTRAIT OF A LADY THOUGHT TO BE MARGHERITA DI COSIMO II, DUCHESS OF PARMA, WEARING A WHITE SATIN DRESS WITH GOLDWORK, A STRING OF LARGE PEARLS AND A JEWELLED HEAD ORNAMENTOil on canvas117.5 x 95.5cm (46¼ x 37½in.)Provenance:Lonsdale Family collection formerly from Kingston Lisle ParkBorn in Antwerp, Sustermans registered in 1609 as a pupil ofWillem de Vos at the city’s Guild of Saint Luke. Ten years later, in 1620, atthe age of twenty-three, he is said to have joined a company of tapestryweavers who had been sent from Paris to Florence by Cosimo II, Grand Duke ofTuscany. Through their agency, he was introduced to the notice of the GrandDuke, who dissuaded him from travelling to Rome, as he had intended, andinstead commissioned him to work at the Medici court. Sustermans remained inthe service of the Medici family as court painter to three generations untilhis death in 1681.He painted numerous portraits of members of the Medicifamily, drawing upon a repertoire of established compositional formulas andadapting them to individual sitters. Characteristic, as can be seen in thepresent portrait, is the artist’s accomplished rendering of richly embellishedand bejewelled clothing. The portrait shares striking similarities, particularly in the treatment of the dress, with the full-length portrait ofMargherita di Cosimo II in the Pitti Palace, Florence, which was painted on theoccasion of her marriage to Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma.
