THE CIRCLE OR STUDIO OF PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR (1841–1919) Still Life with Lilacs, Earthenware Soup Tureen, and Pottery on an Entablature Sketch, oil on mounted canvas. This richly detailed still life depicts a studio table covered with a thick red drape. In the foreground, an oval white earthenware soup tureen with bluish and golden floral decoration catches the light, flanked on the right by a fringed cloth or piece of fabric. Just behind it, the composition centers on a large jug or vase with handles, made of green-glazed terracotta, from which emerges a bouquet of lilac branches with mauve flowers and dark foliage. The background of the room, rendered in shades of brown and earth tones, hints at a small frame hanging on the wall, reinforcing the intimate atmosphere of a studio interior. Condition: As is. Unsigned study. Clear studio pin holes in the upper corners. Slight scuffing and small areas where paint is missing around the edges, particularly in the upper right corner. Dimensions: 53 x 36.5 cm.
