THE CIRCLE OR STUDIO OF PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR (1841–1919) The Row of Cypress Trees and View of the Château Grimaldi at Haut-de-Cagnes Sketch, oil on canvas mounted on board. This plein air study in landscape format offers a framed view of the historic village. On the left, a tight cluster of tall, tapered cypress trees with dark, vertical silhouettes structures the composition and creates a powerful contrast with the brightness of the sky. In the center and on the right, a row of lower trees guides the eye toward the background. There, bathed in the soft, golden light of late afternoon, the fortified mass of Château Grimaldi and its tower stands out on the hill, surrounded by the light-colored facades of the houses in Haut-de-Cagnes. The color palette features soft shades of olive green, brown, and salmon pink for the earth, set against a very fluid gray-blue sky. Condition: As is. Unsigned study. Clearly visible studio thumbtack holes in the upper corners. Dimensions: 17.5 x 27.5 cm.
