THE CIRCLE OR STUDIO OF PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR (1841–1919) View of the village of Cagnes-sur-Mer and the Baou de Saint-Jeannet Sketch, oil on canvas mounted on board. This plein air study is rendered from an elevated vantage point, taking in the Cagnes hinterland. In the foreground, the southern vegetation is enlivened by a bush or tree with vibrant yellow-orange hues, catching the sunlight. Below, in the hollow of the valley, a cluster of houses with red-tiled roofs can be made out, representing the village. The background is dominated by the massive, bluish silhouette of a steep, rocky mountain. The brushwork here is particularly loose and fragmented, rendering the terrain through subtle variations of purples, grays, and blues. Condition: As is. Unsigned study. Clearly visible studio pin holes in the upper corners. Dimensions: 18.5 x 26 cm.
