GEORGES HENRI MANZANA-PISSARRO (1871–1961) Château-Gaillard as Seen from the Seine, at Les Andelys Pencil (charcoal or graphite) on paper, signed lower left. Dimensions: 24 x 32 cm View of the Seine at Les Andelys (Eure, Normandy), depicting a row of bare trees along the water’s edge, with, on the wooded hill in the background, the silhouette of the ruins of Château-Gaillard, a medieval fortress built by Richard the Lionheart (1196–1198), overlooking the Seine Valley. The drawing is executed with great atmospheric sensitivity, using shades of gray to suggest the Normandy mist, in the landscape tradition inherited from his father, Camille Pissarro. Manzana-Pissarro stayed regularly in Les Andelys during the 1920s and 1930s, a location he depicted on several occasions (notably in “La Plage aux Andelys,” oil on cardboard, circa 1930, and “Mist and Morning Sun—The Seine at Les Andelys,” late 1920s). Château-Gaillard, the site’s iconic landmark, has attracted numerous painters since the late 19th century due to the beauty of its natural setting. Provenance: Félix Pissaro, Menton, and the private collection of Jean Eugène Guillaud, Monaco
