LEOPOLD FLAMENG (1831–1911), attributed View of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, 1902 Watercolor on paper, signed “L. Flamant,” dated and located in the lower left corner Image dimensions: 24.5 x 36 cm This is likely the headland on which Villa Kérylos was built between 1902 and 1908 in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. It was commissioned by the Hellenist and archaeologist Théodore Reinach and designed by the architect Emmanuel Pontremoli. A faithful reconstruction of an ancient Greek residence, it is now classified as a Historic Monument and has belonged to the Institut de France since 1928. This detail is particularly interesting in relation to this watercolor because it is dated 1902, the painter Flameng was in Beaulieu-sur-Mer precisely when construction of Villa Kérylos was beginning, making it a visual record of a pivotal era for this seaside resort, which was then booming and very popular with European aristocrats and artists.
